Термин употребляется для обозначения бесплатного озвучивания телевизионных и анимационных сериалов, коротких и полнометражных фильмов, видеороликов и видеоигр.

Существует принципиальная разница между дублированием и фэндабом. Дублирование представляет собой профессиональное многоголосное  озвучивание фильмов, сериалов, игр и тому подобное. Для дублирования привлекаются квалифицированные переводчики, актеры, звукорежиссеры. Озвучивание происходит с использованием профессиональной техники, различных библиотек звуков; реплики подбираются с таким расчётом, чтобы, не искажая смысла, в то же время максимально синхронизировать произносимый текст с движениями губ актёров. <br />Любительское дублирование чаще всего бывает одно- или двухголосным; визуальная синхронизация текста и изображения в большинстве случаев отсутствует, основное внимание уделяется передаче смысла высказывания. Допускаются жаргонные слова и выражения, вплоть до ненормативной лексики.<br />В отличие от профессионального дублирования, при фэндабе нередко имеют место сознательные изменения текста, вплоть до полного переосмысления оригинального сюжета и характеров персонажей (если подобные изменения носят юмористический характер, их принято называть "фандабом", от {{lang-en|fundubbing}}). 

При фэндаббинге возможно также плохое качество звука, поскольку он создаётся трудом самодеятельных участников, ориентированных на быстрое продвижение к зрителю локализованных материалов.

Каждая из перечисленных команд имеет собственную страницу в нескольких популярных социальных сетях, некоторые разместились на своих сайтах. Dubbing is the act of re-recording of a live-action or animated production, typically in a language other than the original. Most productions are translated from different languages, but fandubs do exist for productions that were produced in the fandubber's native language. The dialogue can range from being a close translation to a completely altered version of the original script's story and plots, as well as the personalities of protagonists. The reasons behind fandubbing can range from the production not receiving an official dub to the official dub being poorly received. Fandubs are most commonly done with Japanese animation, but can include live action and animated series and movies in any language. Versions where the story line, character personalities, and content are dramatically altered, typically in a humorous manner, are called "Abridged Series" and "fundubs".

Because fandubs typically use copyrighted material, fandubs face the same copyright implications as fansubs but on a different scale. To avoid copyright issues, fandubs are sometimes made using web-based dubbing tools like [http://dubroo.com/ Dubroo], which does not alter the original videos but just plays the dubbed audio along with the original muted video.

While fansubbing is a highly-popular means by which various Internet-downloaded visual media can be understood by other language markets, fandubbing as a practice has not gained similar momentum as a means of translation by lay Internet users. The majority of fandub projects are arranged for short-form video clips and are often posted to video hosting services such as YouTube.
